Do You Need Voiceover Coaching? - Carrie Olsen Voiceover

Do You Need Voiceover Coaching?

Let's talk about voiceover coaching.

Coaching is a super critical and personal element of your voiceover journey. It is integral to your development as a voice over talent, especially as you think about where you want to go with your voiceover business.

So if you have high aspirations for your voice over career, coaching 100% should be  part of your journey.

This industry is a lot to navigate and if you're just starting out, you can't really expect to go straight to the top with very little knowledge or with things that you've gathered on your own.

You can get personal and professional advice on where you want to go with a coach, so you are more likely to achieve your goals and get to where you want to go.

Voiceover Coaching is Personal

Like I have mentioned, coaching is really personal. It's definitely an interesting concept to navigate because coaches have different approaches on how they teach—the way that they speak and the way that they communicate certain things.

You'll find that you tend to click with one coach over another even if they are essentially teaching the same thing. But just the way that you vibe with each other makes a big difference on how you perform based on their coaching. That's not to say that you need to be best friends with every single coach that you work with, but it does need to be effective.

Work with Multiple Voice Over Coaches

I also recommend working with multiple coaches, but not right from the start. It’s not necessarily good to have two or more really strong voices in your ear at the same time when you're just getting started.

It’s better to have different coaches once you grow and especially as you advance in the genres that you want to do. Certain coaches specialize in commercial coaching, others character coaching or animation. Some coaches might specialize in elearning, others might specialize in promo, radio imaging, audio books—the list can go on. You can have a coach for all of these genres. This is why I have a resource page on my site with a lot of different coaches. I don't think that everybody should necessarily coach with me. I think that you should look at all the coaches and see who you seem to have the best fit with, who aligns with you and your goals best.

What does coaching with me look like?

So some coaches just specialize between two general types of coaching—performance coaching and business coaching.

Where I shine is with a more holistic type of coaching. If you come to me, I'm going to diagnose where you need the most help and then dial into that particular area. For example, if there’s an element in your performance that's lacking, then we'll spend a few sessions focusing on your performance skills. That is going to seep into other areas of voice over because you can't really focus on performance without also looking at self direction.

You take the performance skills we developed in a coaching session so that when you're doing auditions on your own, you're able to apply the things you learned.  But remember, you will never be at 100% because we should always be developing. It's not like once you get something down 100%, you’re good to go. Trends change and your voice also changes. There are always other types of reads that you can develop.

But as a coach, I can help develop the skills you need to deliver a great performance or read. It’s not like I can coach you exactly how to read scripts, as they vary greatly. But I can coach you on how to self-coach yourself on how to read one. I can’t always direct you on how to do sessions, but I can coach you on how to self-direct yourself.

Once you feel that confidence in your ability to self direct, then we might turn toward business coaching and start talking about agents and your website. I'm probably one of the few voice actors who is an expert in website development. I've developed a lot of websites and I developed this website that you're on so I can help you with SEO, with building a website, and technical aspects of your business as well.

I also love marketing. So when you get to that point where you want to start doing outreach and not solely focus on auditioning, I can help you.

Know Your Voiceover Coaching Options

Take a look through the options on my coaching page and see if there's a coaching option that fits your needs.

I'll be happy to chat with you to make that determination and also help you figure out which option might be the best fit for you if you're not quite sure on what is right for you at this moment of your voiceover journey. Let me know if you have any questions and I'm looking forward to working with you.
